GROW YOUR OWN

Play in the Dirt

It is so awesome to read a recipe ingredients list and say to yourself, “I’ve got that, that, this and that, all growing outside my back door”!  Unfortunately for me, we live in an area of Washington, D.C. that was used by the Army as a chemical weapons testing site during World War I.  Although my lot has been cleared as contaminant-free by the EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers, no one in my neighborhood risks growing food straight from the soil.  So, I am limited to container gardening, which is fine with me.  Our backyard is the size of a postage stamp anyways.  But, if you have good soil and space to spare, you should grow as much of your own food as you are able.
